Friends of the Thames (FoTT) is to protecting, restoring, and celebrating the River Thames through community action, education, and advocacy. Founded by environmental campaigner and open water swimmer Laura Reineke, and CEO of River Action UK, James Wallace, our mission is to ensure the Thames is clean, healthy, and safe for people, wildlife, and future generations.

We believe the Thames belongs to everyone—and that safeguarding it requires all of us. Our work is built on collaboration, and we actively partner with charities, NGOs, community groups, schools, scientists, and individuals who share our passion for the river. Whether you’re a campaigner, swimmer, teacher, activist, or concerned resident, there’s a place for you in our growing movement.

Our campaigns include #SaveTheThames, which calls for urgent action on pollution, sewage discharges, and regulatory failure, and Rethink the Sink, which educates the public on the hidden impact of everyday habits. We also lead educational programmes, school visits, citizen science projects, and host talks to empower communities with knowledge and tools to make a difference.

A cornerstone of our work is the River Guardians scheme—a volunteer network of local people trained to observe, report, and help monitor the health of the river in their communities. Guardians contribute vital data, assist with local clean-ups, and act as ambassadors for the Thames in their towns and villages.

To support transparency, engagement, and collective action, we are creating an interactive map that tracks pollution hotspots, sewage outfalls, wildlife sightings, and citizen reports along the river. This map empowers the public with real-time, place-based information—and helps highlight both the challenges the Thames faces and the successes we achieve together.

Friends of the Thames is more than just a charity—it's a connected, passionate community working together to give the river a voice. Join us in the water, on the banks, or behind the scenes. Because together, we are the Friends of the Thames.
